England is famous for its gently rolling hills, lakes and gardens. In this blog, we’re going to look at some of the finest countryside hotels in the north of the country.
Seaham Hall – County Durham
Dating back to 1791, this Georgian hotel is set within 37 acres of gardens and set on top of a cliff within the Durham Heritage Coastline. The rooms range from junior suites to the penthouse, with each room having its own character and furnishings, but all with the same sumptuous luxury. The hotel has two restaurants, with Byron’s restaurant using local ingredients and Ozone, a pan-Asian restaurant with an outdoor terrace and views over the gardens. The hotel also has spa and gym facilities for you to relax in or work out depending on how you feel.
Applegarth Villa Hotel – Cumbria
Located in the Lake District in the town of Windermere, this family-run hotel has 15 individually design bedrooms and 7 suites, each complete with a private hot tub. Each room is individually designed, is adorned with their own individual touches and features its own en-suite bathroom. The restaurant’s menu is focused on local Cumbrian produce with seasonal twists reflecting local availability. The bar offers an extensive wine and whisky list and also serves its own cocktail menu. When you book you can add on extras for your room such as rose petals, a bouquet of flowers or champagne on ice.
Middleton Lodge – Yorkshire
This Georgian Country retreat is set within 200 acres in rural North Yorkshire. The main house is a privately-owned family home, but it can be hired in its entirety for events like weddings, where your guests can stay in the 16 bedrooms. The main accommodation, however, is in the coach house which is its own self-contained boutique hotel. There is also additional accommodation in the farmhouse. All of the rooms have been individually designed to have their own unique character. The Treatment Room spa offers a range of treatments and massages to help you relax on your break. The Coach House bar and restaurant offers British style cuisine using local ingredients sourced within 32 miles of the hotel.
Roundthorn Country Hotel – Cumbria
Overlooking Penrith, this country house is set in its own grounds and offers stunning views over Eden Valley, Pennines and Lakeland Fells. The rooms range from four-poster suites to family rooms that can accommodate up to four people. Every room is en-suite and is individually decorated to make every one unique. Though there is no restaurant as such, “The Great Cumbrian Breakfast” is served every morning and you can dine informally in the evening in the lounge, where you can choose anything from light snacks to a three-course meal. Afternoon tea is also available and it’s a quintessentially English way to spend an afternoon.
